This composition by Yiruma has always reminded me of the Water Margin story, right from the first time I heard it sung by him. It is probably because this song uses the image of rain falling from the sky and water. Yiruma is a South Korean composer and pianist who debuted in the world of piano music at age 14, and has since become one of Asia’s biggest contemporary classical performers. Yiruma began composing when he was 10 years old, after hearing Yuzo Kayama singing “Sukiyaki” on the radio. Yiruma released his first album when he was 14 years old, and went on to release many more in South Korea. Yiruma is known for his “new age” or “contemporary classical” compositions which often feature very long piano passages with minimal or no lyrics. Yiruma’s musical style has been inspired by the movie soundtracks of Ennio Morricone and Yanni. Yiruma has a deep fascination with the piano, and in his teenage years, Yiruma was influenced by Yuzo Kayama. Yiruma composed “River Flows in You”, which would become one of his most famous pieces to date ( Yiruma – River Flows In You Yiruma Yirc-5 17.64 MB ). It is a beautiful piece of piano music that showcases Yiruma’s ability to write long musical passages with fewer than ten notes. Yiruma is really a gifted composer and pianist, who writes very long pieces but they do not sound boring at all! Yiruma has also composed the music for many TV commercials in South Korea. Yiruma played the piano for Yanni’s Greece concert in Seoul, and Yanni was so impressed that he asked Yiruma to perform with him in other countries as well.
