Yiruma (Korean : 유루마, born February 15, 1978) is a South Korean pianist and composer. Yiruma frequently appears at events for DreamWorks Animation’s movies such as Shrek The Third and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Yiruma is best known for his first album, First Love, which became the bestselling album of all time in South Korea. He has since released several popular albums including a namesake second studio album Yiruma and his third The Nocturnal serenade Yiruma . Yiruma’s music is frequently used as background music on various Korean television programmes. Yiruma is also known for composing soundtracks for TV series such as Autumn In My Heart. Yiruma’s music has earned widespread global appeal, and many of his songs have been covered by other artists: “River Flows in You” and “Kiss the Rain” being the most well-known examples, with Yiruma’s versions being used in many television commercials. Yiruma has also appeared on concert stages outside of Korea since the early 2000s, including London, Sydney, Paris and New York City. Yiruma Yoon was born in Seoul, South Korea. Yiruma began to play piano at six years old and wrote his first piece of music when he was eight Yiruma Yoon’s father Yoon Hyun-kun, is a former guitarist in the South Korean group “The Yoo Doo-ri Band”, which released several albums in the 1970s. Yiruma Yoon started composing pieces of music at an early age, but did not start taking piano lessons until age six. Yiruma Yoon’s father died when Yiruma Yoon was thirteen years old, which Yiruma Yoon said strongly influenced the dreamy style of his music including “River Flows in You”. Yiruma Yoon graduated from Daejeon Arts High School and majored in piano in college with a minor in Western music Yiruma Yoon holds a bachelor’s degree from Yonsei University in South Korea Yiruma Yoon graduated with a master’s degree in music composition from the University of York, England Yiruma Yoon studied film scoring at London’s Royal College of Music and worked as an assistant to Academy Award-winning composer Mychael Danna Yiruma Yoon’s work often has a calm tone, and is reminiscent of the style of Claude Debussy Yiruma Yoon makes heavy use of repetition, dynamics, pedal tones, ostinatos and glissandos. Yiruma Yoon has also written several scores for television dramas.
