Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American recording artist and actress.
Grammy Award-winning singer Whitney Houston is the most awarded female act of all time, taking away accolades including; six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. Whitney Houston has sold over 170 million album copies worldwide. Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born in 1963 in what became the New Hope Housing Projects in East Harlem, Manhattan, New York City. Whitney’s parents are John Russell Houston Jr. (1935–2002), an Army Veteran and gospel singer, and gospel singer Emily “Cissy” (Drinkard) Houston. Whitney’s maternal cousin, Dionne Warwick is Whitney’s godmother. Whitney Houston has an older brother, Gary Garland (born 1956). Whitney Houston was raised a Baptist, but was also exposed to the Pentecostal church. After the 1967 Newark riots, the family moved to a middle-class area in East Orange, New Jersey named South Toms River. Whitney Houston started singing at the New Hope Baptist Church as a soloist at age 11. Whitney Houston was featured in her first commercial when she was 12, performing “Guide My Soul” for the New Hope Baptist Church choir’s 1969 debut LP record Guide My Soul. Whitney Houston was also a successful child model starting in early adolescence, appearing in Seventeen magazine among other places. Whitney Houston’s parents separated in August 1979 and divorced in 1999. Whitney Houston remained with her mother. Whitney Houston briefly attended Rhode Island College before dropping out to pursue her music career.
