Undertale is a role-playing video game created by American indie developer and composer Toby Fox, who previously worked on the Earthbound Halloween Hack. Undertale’s story takes place in a world separate from our own where monsters live peacefully on the surface of the planet unaware of the human race. Players control a human child as they travel through this world and attempt to return back home, facing moral choices that influence Undertale’s story. Undertale has been praised by critics for its art style, music, humor and characters. The game was nominated for multiple Game of the Year awards including Giant Bomb’s Best PC Game of 2015,[1] Destructoid’s third best game of 2015,[2] and for The Game Award’s Best Indie Game and Best Music in 2015.[3] Undertale was a commercial success, selling over a million copies by the end of 2015. Undertale is also known for being free from any violence or combat mechanics, instead focusing on the importance of understanding an opponent, which has been identified as Undertale’s central theme. Undertale is also popular for its metafictional elements and flexibility in regards to the multiple different endings that can be achieved.
