The Temptations – My Girl The Temptations’ biggest hit and signature song, “My Girl,” was released in January 1965. The band’s publicist at this time was Billy Davis Jr., who would later go on to be a member of The 5th Dimension. The song is about a man’s devotion for his girlfriend and how much she means to him. The song was written by two of The Temptations’ members, Eddie Kendricks and Otis Williams, who were roommates at the time they wrote it. The song was originally recorded with The Temptations’ then-lead singer David Ruffin on lead but after an argument about the lyrics, Eddie took over lead vocals. The song became The Temptations’ first million-seller, eventually selling over one million copies. The band members are singing the refrain of “My Girl” repeatedly until Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, and Eddie Kendricks begin to sing the lyrics together in harmony on the final two refrains. The Supremes recorded their own version of this song in 1966, which The Temptations ended up recording as an answer song. The single became The Supremes’ first number-one hit. The Newbeats had the biggest success with this song, however, when they reached #6 on The Billboard Hot 100 with their cover of the song in 1965. The song was The Temptations’ number-one single until “I Can’t Get Next to You” succeeded it in 1969, The Supremes’ version was also very popular; their cover of this song reached #1 on The Billboard Hot 100 in 1966 and The Beatles covered the song in 1967 (though they didn’t release it until The Beatles Anthology in 1995). The song was included on The Temptations’ 1965 album The Temptations Sing Smokey. The song has also been covered by The Jackson 5 (during their early days with Motown), New Edition, The Fugees, Bobby Brown, A Teens, Usher, and most recently Glee, The Temptations’ cover is also available on the game The Hip Hop Dance Experience. The song has become synonymous with The Temptations and it is said that no one who has covered this song has ever matched The Temptations’ version.
