The Police The Police were a British rock band formed in London in 1977. The Police consisted of Sting (vocals, bass), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums). The music of The Police combines reggae, jazz, funk, punk rock, and new wave. The band are widely considered to have been one of the first new-wave groups to achieve mainstream success, and as such they are one of The Rolling Stones’ “top-drawer” opening acts. The Police sold over 50 million albums worldwide and were the world’s highest-earning musicians in 2008, thanks to their reunion tour. The band has won a number of music awards throughout their career, including six Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards—winning Best British Group once, an MTV Video Music Award and in 2003 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Police have been included among both Rolling Stone’s and VH1’s lists of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The Police formed in London in 1977 as part of The Punk movement. The band’s first choice of members included Henry Padovani (saxophone), Jean-Jacques Burnel (bass), and Keith Millar (guitar); they became The Police after Stewart Copeland joined as drummer. The band played at The Roxy during its first month, made their television debut on BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test in February 1978, and released their first single, “Fall Out” in January 1979. The band reconvened in November 1979 after they had been dropped by A&M Records to record their debut album Outlandos d’Amour, which was released in October of that year.
