It was released in Europe on October 6, 2007, North America on July 13, 2007 and Japan on December 7, 2007. Super Paper Mario is a role-playing video game (RPG) which uses the gameplay elements of both the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Gamecube, the first of a few games to do this. Super Paper Mario has a 2-D environment similar to those in older RPGs such as Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or Final Fantasy VI.
The player controls Mario and later Princess Peach and Bowser, who each have their own abilities. During the course of the game, Mario gains a new partner, each with her or his own abilities. The player can switch between these characters at any time during gameplay outside of battles. Super Paper Mario looks like a 2-D Super Nintendo Entertainment System video game when only one character is present on screen but turns into a 3-D “Paper” style environment when two or more characters join together to perform an action. Super Paper Mario is said to be a “tribute” to the Super Nintendo video games Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and Super Mario Bros. 3
