It is the first Super Metroid game released and the third overall in the Metroid series, excluding the 1991 Game Boy game Metroid II: Return of Samus. Super Metroid was highly acclaimed by critics, who praised it for its atmosphere, gameplay, music and graphics. Super Metroid takes place on planet Zebes, where the player controls Super Metroid, an advanced biomechanical organism resembling a larva Metroid. It is the sequel to the 1986 game Metroid and 1991 game Super Metroid. Super Metroid begins with Samus Aran receiving a distress signal from the Space Pirate frigate Orpheon, which had used up all of its fuel in order to escape an impending explosion of the planet Zebes, and had to evacuate. Samus lands on Zebes and explores the frigate, where she battles past Troopers and Space Pirates until she comes across Ridley, her nemesis since the beginning of the Metroid series. After defeating Ridley, Samus follows an infected Parasite Queen through a maze-like passage called the “Tunnel”, where she obtains the Morph Ball. A Super Metroid-like creature then attacks Samus, but is destroyed by an enormous creature called the Super Metroid that Samus faces at the end of each game. The Super Metroid escapes with its energy drained and leaves Samus unconscious.
