After Sonic the Hedgehog’s initial release on the Sega Mega Drive in 1991, Sonic CD was released which contained an additional game Sonic the Hedgehog CD.
The Sonic the Hedgehog Special Stage is one of these bonus games that can be unlocked. This bonus game requires Sonic to collect blue spheres while avoiding red ones – the ‘Special Stage’.
Sonic can collect seven blue spheres under one minute to be awarded with Sonic 1’s first Chaos Emerald. Sonic the Hedgehog CD has music for each of Sonic’s bonus games, including Sonic the Hedgehog Special Stage which is titled ‘Sonic – You Can Do Anything’.
Special Stage BGM composer Naofumi Hataya was interviewed by Shun Nakamura on Sonic Channel where he talks about composing Sonic the Hedgehog Special Stage.
According to Naofumi Hataya, Sonic the Hedgehog CD was developed so Sonic 1 could be included in it. Sonic CD had more sound staff involved compared to Sonic 1 due to Sonic CD having many different versions of itself – Japanese, American and European versions. Sonic 1’s level music is used as the Sonic the Hedgehog Special Stage BGM, which Naofumi Hataya rearranged. Sonic CD was originally composed with FM chips instead of sampled sounds so Sonic 1’s stage music was originally composed with samples. Since Sonic CD had many different versions it would also have different arrangements. Sonic 1’s samples were used in Sonic CD because Sonic CD was released after Sonic 1 and Sonic CD had no time to adjust the samples into its own composition which would require different equipment. Sonic 1’s level music is also used for Tails’ Sky Chase Zone.
Naofumi Hataya composed Sonic the Hedgehog Special Stage BGM with a Juno-6 synthesizer, which used six operators. Sonic the Hedgehog Special Stage BGM is composed with a Juno-6 synthesizer that was used before Sonic CD’s initial release.
According to Naofumi Hataya, Sonic CD had two different soundtracks for Sonic the Hedgehog Special Stage – one arranged version and one original version. Sonic 1’s Sonic the Hedgehog Special Stage BGM was arranged for Sonic CD’s Sonic the Hedgehog Special Stage.
