Asylum is a song by Silverchair and was released in November of 2002 as the lead single from their fourth studio album Diorama. The song reached number one on the American Modern Rock Tracks chart and number five on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart.
The song’s lyrics were written by Daniel Johns and its music was written by Silverchair. Johns stated that Asylum was his attempt to write something slower, and added the track’s finished version came about after many tries.
The song appears to be inspired by a number of people or events in Johns’ life including Kurt Cobain (frontman for Nirvana who committed suicide), River Phoenix (actor whom also died at a young age) and his older sister.
