Secret of Mana is a 1993 action role-playing video game developed and published by Square for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Secret of Mana is the second instalment in the Mana series, and was originally released in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 2. Secret of Mana’s story focuses on how the protagonist, Randi, squares off against a treacherous empire in an attempt to prevent them from conquering the world with the power of an ancient flying fortress. Secret of Mana is played in a top-down perspective and consists of three playable characters; Randi, Primm and Popoi. The game features both battles and storyline events. Secret of Mana’s gameplay is similar to its predecessor, Seiken Densetsu (Final Fantasy Adventure). Players can buy weapons, armour, and items at shops throughout the game, equip them to the characters for use in battle and select special skills from a list on their turn. Secret of Mana utilizes an innovative ring menu system for quickly using magic and items. When holding the button, a ring-shaped menu appears on the screen with eight emblems corresponding to the eight types of magic and items. To select a particular item or spell, players must press the corresponding button in conjunction with one of the directions on the control pad.
