In one of Rihanna’s most emotional songs, Rihanna begs an ex-boyfriend to stay with her one more night. Rihanna co-wrote this song with James “Jim Jonsin” Scheffer and Evan “Kidd” Bogart. Stay is a heartbreak ballad that was produced by Jim Jonsin and features guest vocals Rihanna’s former boyfriend, hip hop artist Mikky Ekko.
The song begins with Rihanna singing “Stay, won’t you stay”, accompanied only by the piano. Rihanna urges her ex-boyfriend to stay with her one more night in an emotional tone, both pleading and using endearments such as “baby”. Rihanna’s vocals are accentuated by the piano, as Rihanna sings “I can make, I can make it rain”, with a crack in her voice as if she is trying to hold back tears. Rih Rih follows up the first chorus by asking why he is going through so much trouble for somebody who was not worth it and pleads that he stay for one more night. Rihanna then takes control of the song with a new, strong voice as she sings that she can give him whatever he wants if he stays. Rihanna’s vocals are still accented by the piano, but have more intensity than before – eventually Rih Rih belts out “I can make it rain”.
After Rih Rih repeats the chorus once more, the intense sound of Rih Rih’s voice is replaced by a softer, higher pitched Rih Rih saying “stay” as Mikky Ekko begins to sing. Mikky Ekko sings from his perspective as Rihanna’s ex-boyfriend trying to convince Rih Rih not to leave him as he describes what he likes about Rih Rih. Rih Rih is no longer singing, but accompanies Mikky Ekko with the piano as he sings about how good they are together and begs Rih Rih to give him another chance.
Mikky Ekko is the only one singing during the second verse; Rih Rih takes over for the rest of song. Rih Rih begins by singing lower than Rih Rih did before as Rih Rih and Mikky Ekko sing the chorus together, Rih Rih with a deeper voice and Mikky Ekko with a slightly higher one. Rih Rih sings about how good she is for him as that’s what he likes about her the most. The second verse features lyrics such as “A little faith can take you a long way baby, so stay” and Rih Rih has the same intensity in her voice that Rihanna had in Rih Rih’s voice during Rih Rih’s verses.
After the second chorus, Mikky Ekko sings once more for Rih Rih with even more intensity than before. He tells Rih Rih that he knows who she is and Rih Rih is not alone in this. Rih Rih once again leaves the song as Rih Rih and Mikky Ekko sing together, but Rih Rih sings a little softer than before while Mikky Ekko takes control of the song with his powerful voice. Rih Rih sings “stay” one last time during the end of the song right after which all instruments finally fall away. Rih Rih’s vocals still have a crack in Rih Rih’s voice as Rih Rih sings “last chance”.
