Everybody Hurts – REM
“Everybody Hurts” is a song by R.E.M., released as the first single from the band’s 1992 album, Automatic for the People . It was written by drummer Bill Berry , Peter Buck, and singer Michael Stipe , who all share writing credit on the song. The original demo title of “Everybody Hurts” was “Automatic,” a fact referenced in a scene from the band’s 2007 live DVD The Best of ’86 : Live at Farm Aid . Peter Buck plays guitar, while Mike Mills plays bass and Bill Berry plays drums.
The song features guest vocals by country music singer-songwriter Willie Nelson . Released as a single in December 1992, it became the band’s second song to top the Modern Rock Tracks chart for seven weeks. It also reached number 30 on the UK Singles Chart , REM’s highest singles chart position in that country until ” The Great Beyond ” reached number three in 2001.
The song was included on REM’s Warner Bros . Records best of album, In Time: The Best of REM 1988–2003 .
