Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations is a visual novel adventure video game developed and published by Capcom. It was released for the Nintendo DS in Japan on November 17, 2007. The game serves as a prequel to Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney , Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Justice For All , and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations . Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice is a follow-up to this game.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations was met with both critical and commercial success, having sold over 1 million units worldwide by 2008. Reviews for the game were highly positive; critics praised its engaging storyline, improved graphics and audio quality, characters, Phoenix’s new gameplay mechanics alongside an improved user interface, the cases’ varying difficulty levels, and its faithfulness to the original trilogy. Critics did however feel that there were some issues with pacing in later parts of the game. Gameplay improvements over previous installments include Phoenix Wright’s ability to examine documents, evidence, and profiles at any time, as well as his ability to examine crime scenes for specific details. Phoenix can now use his abilities to “confirm” statements via the psyche-lock system introduced in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Justice For All .
The game was directed by Takeshi Yamazaki , produced by Atsushi Inaba and directed by Motohide Eshiro . The writers were Shu Takumi, Aya Kyogoku , and Shinsuke Kodama with music composed by Noriyuki Iwadare . Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations is the final game in the Phoenix Wright canon to include Japanese language voices; Phoenix Wright’s Japanese voice actor, Takashi Kondo , was replaced by Hiroki Narimiya in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies . Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice states that Phoenix’s full name is Phoenix Wright; previously, his given name had simply been “Phoenix” without the “Wright”.
The game takes place roughly a year after Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Justice For All , and follows Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice , and Athena Cykes . Phoenix becomes the playable protagonist for portions of five chapters; during these chapters, he defends Mia Fey in a series of flashback trials. Phoenix receives help from his current assistant Maya Fey and his former assistant, Maya’s cousin Pearl Fey . Phoenix also assists Apollo Justice and Athena Cykes, who defend characters on their own behalf. In addition to Phoenix’s five cases, Phoenix plays a minor role in the remaining three cases of the game as a supporting character.
