Paper Mario is a role-playing game that is frequently compared to Dragon Quest and Mother, as Paper Mario contains many of the characteristics that define those two games; this includes an emphasis on turn-based combat, a level advancement system featuring experience points, an exploration of various towns and dungeons, boss battles that are frequently cited as the highlight of Paper Mario, and events within the game that require certain commands to be performed multiple times before they are resolved.
