Lupang Hinirang (English: Land of the Morning) is the national anthem of the Philippines. Its music was composed in 1898 by Julian Felipe, and the lyrics were adapted from the ode “Filipinas,” a patriotic poem written by Jose Palma in 1899 after the victory at Biak-na-Bato. Lupang Hinirang was officially adopted as the national anthem of the Philippines on 12 July 1946. Lupa ng Bayan (English: “Grass of the Nation”) is its Tagalog transliteration, and Land of the Morning is a corresponding English translation.
Portions of the lyrics are in Tagalog, although it is not required that the national anthem be sung in that language. Lupa ng Bayan is alternatively translated as The Land of the People or The Nation’s Grasses, and Lupang Hinirang as Land of the Morning.
