The Deutschlandlied German National Anthem is an unofficial anthem of Germany. The Deutsclandlied was originally written as part of a collection of poems and later adopted for use as a national anthem by the Weimar Republic in 1922.
The Deutschlandlied ‘s lyrics come from a poem published in 1841 – Deutschland, Deutschland über alles – by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben. It was meant to serve as a Deutschland über alles replacement after this became unpopular in the anti-German climate following World War I. The Deutsclandlied is set to an adaptation of Haydn’s melody used in the Austrian Emperor’s Hymn.
