Background Information/Explanation (optional): Metal Gear is a series of stealth games published by Konami, starring the character Solid Snake as the main protagonist. It has been featured on 8 different consoles and the first game was released in 1987 for the MSX2 platform. Metal Gear games have been developed by Konami’s internal Hideo Kojima team, which were later included in the Metal Gear Solid series.

In Metal Gear, the player must navigate through areas of armed enemies and security systems to reach a particular destination or discover secret passages located within more open-ended environments. In Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Solid 5, much of the game’s scenery is realistically proportioned. The player must use various tactics to evade or attack enemies so they can advance through the game’s locations while avoiding potentially fatal situations.

The Metal Gear series centers on wars between powerful secret conspiratorial organizations and governments. Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Solid 5 take place in the 21st century with their respective environments being battlefields in a series of conflicts between two rivaling factions: the Patriots led by a group of people called “The Philosophers” and an alliance of dis-empowered soldiers, spies and mercenaries called “The Sons of Big Boss”, led by the game’s protagonist. Metal Gear Solid focuses on a soldier named Solid Snake who is sent to rescue a kidnapped man from an Alaskan military base controlled by his one-time unit FOXHOUND, which has gone rogue with their leader Liquid Snake. Metal Gear Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake takes place years after Metal Gear. The game’s protagonist is Solid Snake, a rookie member of an elite special forces unit who is sent to the fortress Galuade as a part of his first mission, but soon learns that he must stop Metal Gear—a walking bipedal weapon armed with nuclear missiles. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is set in 1964, the prologue reveals that Metal Gear was used during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops follows two soldiers from Big Boss’s original unit as they fight off a group of elite soldiers called the FOX Unit and discover Metal Gear within their base, which is revealed to be Metal Gear Solid 3’s Metal Gear GANDER, originally intended for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty signed in 1995. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots takes place four years after Metal Gear Solid 2 and follows Old Snake, who is one of Big Boss’s clones.
