All Mariah Carey wants for Christmas is you! Mariah Carey’s 1994 hit song has found its rightful place in the holiday canon. As Mariah herself says, “This is one of those songs that immediately brings people into a certain time and place.”
The catchy track was co-written by Mariah with Walter Afanasieff , who produced Mariah’s early hits. Mariah had been working on a Christmas album, and she felt that all she really wanted to add to it was one good holiday song. She wrote the song with Walter in about an hour during a writing session near the end of recording her album Music Box .
The song’s comically romantic lyrics describe Mariah’s desire to find the perfect gift for her man during the holiday season. Mariah says she was inspired by seeing Christmas lights streaming around New York City’s Rockefeller Center .
Mariah had recorded two songs with Walter, but had not found a good writing partner until this point. Mariah describes how she and Walter clicked right away: “I wrote Mariah’s song [ All I Want For Christmas Is You ] in about an hour and Mariah liked it, and she recorded it,” Walter said. “It was one of those magical things–I guess we did write very well together.” Mariah agreed: “We had a good rapport. We wrote some other songs too; they didn’t end up on any of my albums, but that’s how we met and really just clicked — he was the first person I wrote with in a long time.” Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You Piano Sheet Music
