Katie Melua is a Georgian-British singer, songwriter and musician.
She came to prominence in 2003 after appearing on the BBC television programme “Fame Academy”, eventually finishing as the show’s runner up. Katie was born on 16 September 1984 in Tbilisi, Georgia where she grew up with her parents – Katie describes her childhood as happy and secure, and she is the second of three children.
Katie learnt to play the piano at the age of seven; her father made Katie practise for two hours each day after school and before bedtime. Katie describes herself as a “geeky child” who got bullied in school, but found comfort in playing music. Katie still plays the piano regularly and often takes it on tour with her. Katie’s first album, Call Off The Search , was released in 2003
After Katie had competed on “Fame Academy” she became a professional musician. She used to put all of her money towards keeping her career afloat by recording demo songs – Katie learnt the meaning of “paying your dues” when she began playing small gigs just to survive. Katie’s big break finally came in 2003 after she finished as runner up on the first series of “Fame Academy”. Katie was signed by the record label, Dramatico Entertainment , and soon released her highly successful debut album, Call Off The Search . Katie released four more albums during the noughties, including Piece By Piece , Katie Melua & the orchestra of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields , The House and In Winter .
