John Powell is a British music composer who composes for movies, television and video games. John has been nominated for three Academy Awards in his career thus far and scores many blockbuster movie hits including How To Train Your Dragon, Shrek the Third , Kung Fu Panda and its sequel Kung Fu Panda 2. John was also responsible for scoring for 20th Century Fox’s animated movie, Epic. John Powell was born in London, England on the 11th September 1957. John’s father was a judge whilst his mother served as a school teacher. John didn’t have much interest in following his parents’ footsteps but instead dedicated his time to music and learnt how to play several musical instruments at a young age including drums, piano and guitar. John later learnt to play the trumpet and alto saxophone at secondary school. John attended Hampton Grammar School where he would often play in several bands during his free time. John began studying drama at Guildford but once again changed his mind and left to study music instead due to not being able to cope with the course modules. John then began studying composition at the Royal Academy of Music and graduated in 1980. John tried for several jobs and finally found work as a session musician but John was completely focused on arranging and composing music. John would later become assistant to composer Patrick Doyle who gave John much advice when it came to writing music for film, television and also large orchestral scores. John was then employed by Hans Zimmer whom John learnt much from and John worked together with Patrick Doyle once again on several television series including Basil The Great Mouse Detective, Frankenstein, The Adventures Of Pinocchio and Peter Gunn.
