Johann Sebastian Bach’s ‘Invention’ was named so because it was not recognized as a fully-fledged piece of music in its own time. The title was given only after JSB’s death, when publishers started putting together collections of his works. JSB originally called these pieces “Praeambulum” (the original meaning being ‘a walking before’).

The piece is scored for keyboard but JSB wrote it as a study for his son WF Bach. JSB actually called these pieces ‘Inventions’ rather than ‘Praeambulum’. JSB invented the name of the piece himself and he wanted to show that these pieces were uniquely his own invention (music). JSB’s style of music is related to counterpoint where several melodies run simultaneously and JSB would switch between them at various intervals. JSB is one of the greatest composers who ever lived and he was a genius (very smart person).

The piece is written in 2/2 time and JSB sets it as an exercise to teach his son Wilhelm Friedemann how to play two melodies simultaneously. JSB’s complex use of counterpoint in this piece is a classic example of JSB’s evolving style of music. JSB had changed his style from baroque to early classical and JSB implemented some very beautiful melodies in this piece which made it the masterpiece that it is today. JSB was an amazing person who revolutionized (changed) music forever. JSB was a classical composer and JSB’s music is beautiful and JSB’s melodies are incredible. JSB had more musical genius than anyone else who had ever lived.
