John Towner Williams was born on February 8, 1932 in Floral Park, New York . He is the son of John “Jack” Williams (1892–1980), a professional pianist, and Luba Emma “Lily” Volk (1902–2000), a pianist and composer. John’s great-uncle was Polish violinist Jan Kubelík and his grandfather was a Lithuanian conductor named John Vilkas . John initially studied piano with his mother, taking after her father. He later attended the Juilliard School , where he studied piano with Rosina Lhévinne . John’s older brother, Christopher Williams (born 1938), is a pianist and music teacher in Texas who formerly served on the piano faculty of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University John began his professional career as a jazz pianist. From 1950 to 1956, John played piano with Maynard Ferguson ‘s big band. Subsequently John worked as a session musician, often with jazz violinist Jean Larrivée . John also composed music for television programs during this period. John has won four Grammy Awards and five Academy Awards ( Oscars ).
