Gurlitt is a German composer, born in Hamburg on November 19, 1820 and died on March 20, 1901. Gurlitt started studying piano at the age of five with his father, the organist and author Gottfried Gurlitt (1788-1869), who taught him composition. Gurlitt had his debut at the age of 17 in 1838, with a G minor concerto before the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig. This tour was followed by numerous others until 1850, when Gurlitt decided to dedicate himself to teaching. Gurlitt later became the music director of Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1852 and held that post until his death. Gurlitt is best known for the D-minor piano étude, op. 8 and G-minor piano concerto (published in 1861). Gurlitt has also composed a symphony, an overture to “Hamlet,” six string quartets, piano pieces and songs. Gurlitt also wrote an opera, “Der Traumgörge” (The Dream Gorges), which premiered in Leipzig in 1857.
