Grieg composed in all major genres, except for opera. Grieg’s works include pieces inspired by Norwegian folk music, examples of Northern Romanticism, and pieces inspired by his love for the composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Grieg’s works were some of the most popular music in Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Grieg is regarded as an important innovator of Norwegian music for combining traditional folk tunes with ideas from classical music, something that had not been done before him to such a degree. Grieg himself described the music he composed as “national”. Grieg was born in Bergen, Norway. Grieg’s father, Alexander Grieg (1806-1872), was a civil merchant who frequently traveled abroad on business before marrying the daughter of his friend and business partner Ole Jacob Broch (1789-1876).
