This song was written by Kohshi Inaba and appears on his Story of Heroes album under the name “The Joyful Farmer” (喜びの田舎者 – Kibon no Inashama). It was originally written as a fan song for the Animal Crossing video game series.
The first few times I heard it, I thought it had been translated from another language to Japanese as this has happened before with many songs from other Nintendo franchises. In fact, despite being an English song, “Joyous Farmer” has been translated into many languages including French, Spanish, German, Chinese and Korean.
Inaba had contacted Nintendo asking if he could write a theme song for Animal Crossing which they accepted. The original request was to have the sound of “cheering people in the audience during the live music concerts”, but Inaba changed this to simply singing about the joys of farming.
The song is sung in first person with an old farmer singing about his childhood and ascribing all the wonderful things he sees around him to “the power of nature”. This song has become popular amongst fans of Nintendo games, anime (One Piece in particular) and Tokyo Disneyland. However it is not limited to these as many people who are not familiar with these series have also become fans of the song.
As of December 2013, there are over 1 million views on NicoNicoDouga of various covers and parodies featuring this song. Even Korean boy band SHINee released a cover of it.
The lyrics are not very complex which makes this an ideal song for Grade 2 students who want to sing and play piano.
