Grade 2 – Gavotte in D Piano Sheet Music Grade 2 Grade level: Grade 2 Class: Piano Time Period: Baroque Composer : Jean-Baptiste Lully Notes/summary of composition:
The Gavotte is a French dance from the Renaissance and Baroque eras, with a time signature either of 8 or 16, occasionally changing mid-phrase. It was usually found early in an orchestral suite, and often preceded the Arpeggione or Courante.
The Gavotte was popular in France in the seventeenth century, but during the eighteenth century it became more strongly associated with music written outside France, especially that of Italy. It was the Baroque dance par excellence, for one because it is short. One may distinguish three basic types of Gavottes: the old French type, the Italian type, and finally a type cultivated in the 19th century that may be called Grand-Gavotte or Gavotte en Rondeau.
