Gavin Shane DeGraw is an American singer-songwriter. He rose to fame with the release of his debut single “I Don’t Want To Be” from his debut album Chariot which became the theme song for the hit TV show One Tree Hill, in which Gavin guest starred in 2005. Gavin released his third studio album Sweeter on August 19, 2014. Gavin has won the Male Vocalist of The Year and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 2005 American Music Awards for “Chariot”. Gavin was also nominated as Breakthrough Artist of 2006 at the 2006 Billboard Music Awards.
“I Don’t Want to Be” is Gavin’s most popular song. It is Gavin’s only single to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and it is Gavin’s most successful single in most countries, including peaking at number one in Australia for four weeks, New Zealand for three weeks, and reaching number two in the United Kingdom. In the United States, Gavin peaked at number three, becoming Gavin’s highest peaking single in that country until “Not Over You” reached number two in 2011.
This is Gavin’s most successful song ever to be played on the radio according to Billboard Magazine. Gavin has said that he believed it would become a hit because, after writing the song, Gavin experienced a “recognition of the pain, yet lack of sadness” Gavin felt at the time.
This song has been covered three times on X Factor Australia, once by The Collective (2012), Dami Im (2013), and Samantha Jade (2014). Gavin Degraw performed this song live for Live Lounge in 2007. Gavin Degraw was featured on The Collective’s single “You Got Me” from their debut album Up Close, released in May 2014. Gavin Degraw also recorded a Spanish version of his song “I Don’t Want to Be”, called “No Quiero Estar Sin Ti”.
