Francois Couperin (1668-1733) was a French Baroque composer, organist and harpsichordist. He was known as “Couperin le Grand” to distinguish him from other members of the musically talented Couperin family. Francois Couperin wrote for harpsichord, pipe organ, harp and for instruments he called “basse de viole” (a large viol) and “basse de violon” (a large violin). Francois Couperin was born in Chaumes-en-Brie, the fourth of Jean & Anne Couperin’s eleven children. Francois Couperin died at age 65 in Paris.
