Francois Couperin was a French Baroque composer, organist and harpsichordist. Francois Couperin is regarded as one of the supreme masters of French baroque music. Francois Couperin wrote for the harpsichord, the clavecin (the instrument of his father Francois Couperin le grand), and the organ. Francois Couperin has often been compared to Francois Couperin le Grand (30 August 1668 – 30 September 1733) who was also a composer, organist and harpsichordist. Francois Couperin the Great was Francois Couperin’s uncle. Francois Couperin was Francois Couperin le grand (the nephew)’s teacher and mentor. Francois Couperin began composing chansons in his teens, and from 1689 to 1713 he served at Saint Gervais in Paris, one of the most demanding organist posts in France. Francois Couperin’s career at the priory of Saint-Gervais brought him into contact with a number of prominent musicians, among them Francois Couperin le Grand.
