Many Final Fantasy games are set in a fantasy based on Asian cultures , with influences either from East Asian or South Asian culture. Final Fantasy VII takes place on a futuristic Earth with mainly Japanese, but also European and Middle Eastern influences that still maintain the game’s original fantasy setting.

Final Fantasy VII was first released in Japan on January 31, 1997 for PlayStation video game console . The North American version came out in September of the same year after being delayed from its original June release. Final Fantasy VII was later re-released worldwide on the PlayStation Network and for PC as Final Fantasy VII International . The Final Fantasy series was created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, a Japanese game designer who began developing games in 1978. The series originated on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES); its first installments were Final Fantasy I (1987) and Final Fantasy II (1988). The gameplay of each Final Fantasy game is similar. Each Final Fantasy title features a fantasy setting with a plot centered on characters and the parties they form to explore the world and fight against the enemies they encounter along their journeys. Final Fantasy games feature “active time battle ” (ATB) systems, which originated in Final Fantasy IV , allowing players to see character names and a real-time gauge showing how long remains until the character will execute his or her next action. Final Fantasy II introduced an icon-based “reaction system”, which has been used in later Final Fantasy titles to determine whether an opponent will be “weak” (reacting positively) or “strong” (reacting negatively) to a given character. Final Fantasy IV introduced a “conditional turn-based battle ” (CTB) system alongside the ATB system, which became Final Fantasy VII ‘ s “Conditional Turn-Based” or CTB2 system. Final Fantasy VII brought innovations such as “Materia “, espers, and large plot twists that have become staples of Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX featured improved graphics and sound, making them some of the most well-received Final Fantasy games by both reviewers and fans alike to date. Final Fantasy X was a high-definition remastering of Final Fantasy X , bringing it back to its pre-rendered backgrounds and movie sequences with updated gameplay elements; it was also released on the PlayStation 3 alongside Final Fantasy X-2 . Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XII were developed for PC, using Square Enix’s Crystal Tools engine ; Final Fantasy XII was also ported to the Xbox 360. Final Fantasy XIII s battle system is considered a hybrid between “linear” and “open” design: it changes automatically depending on whether the player-controlled characters are fighting a single opponent or multiple enemies. Final Fantasy XIII was released for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG developed for both PlayStation 3 and Windows PCs; it first appeared in public as a concept at E3 2006 . Final Fantasy XIV Online features battles fought by players with customized avatars who are part of customizable “Guilds”; there have been Final Fantasy games where players have to control a party of characters chosen by the player, and Final Fantasy XIV is no exception. Final Fantasy XV is an upcoming action role-playing game being developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . Final Fantasy XV will feature an online multiplayer mode, which will allow players to play with others over the internet.
