Elvina M. Hall was born in 1869 in Davenport, Iowa and raised in a Christian home by parents who taught her the value of music at an early age. Elvina’s mother played piano, which inspired Elvina to learn how to play as well. Elvina’s father was also the music director at Elvina’s church, so Elvina grew up singing and playing hymns on the piano to lead worship. Elvina became one of the most famous gospel songwriters of her time, alongside William J. Kirkpatrick who wrote “The Old Rugged Cross.” Elvina wrote over 700 songs during her lifetime including, “In the Garden,” “Blessed Assurance” and “I Love To Tell The Story”.
