Edward MacDowell was born in New York City in 1860 to Edward and Charlotte MacDowell. Edward senior was an Irishman, a failed actor who turned his attention towards the law when he came to America. Edward junior followed in his father’s footsteps when he began studying law at Columbia University for two years between 1877-79, but he had more success as a musician, graduating from the National Conservatory of Music in 1882. Edward senior supported his son’s passion for music with lessons and finally agreed to Edward studying abroad.
