Dota 2 is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game developed and published by Valve Corporation. Dota 2 is played in matches between two teams that consist of five players, with both teams occupying their own separate base on the map. Each of the ten players independently controls a powerful character, known as a “hero”, who all have unique abilities and differing styles of play. During a match, players collect experience points and items for their heroes to successfully defeat the opposing team’s heroes in player versus player combat. A team wins by being the first to destroy a large structure located in the opposing team’s base, called “The Ancient”. Dota 2 was released in July 2013 and has grown in popularity, with an active and expansive fan base. Dota 2 is currently one of the most played having hundred thousands of people playing at any given time and a total of over a million unique players per month. Dota’s current world record for peak concurrent players was established by Dota 2 on March 24, 2016 when it reached 1,286,617 players online. Dota 2 has a strong presence in eSports, with teams from across the world participating in Dota’s largest tournaments. The game is also very well known for its art style and gameplay, which was inspired by Defense of the Ancients “DotA Allstars”, one of Dota’s predecessor. Dota 2 was announced in October 2010 when Dota development was officially moved from the WarCraft III engine to Dota’s new engine, Source.
