The Prelude to Act 1 of Debussy’s Pelleas et Melisande is an homage to or pastiche of the composer Joseph Haydn, one that provides Debussy with a platform yet again to demonstrate his distinctive sound world. Debussy’s free flowing, chromatic approach to harmony, juxtaposed with his use of ‘snap-like’ octave jumps in the bass gives Debussy’s work a distinct voice. Although Debussy’s style was not without precedent within French music – Debussy himself pointed to the influence of Cesar Franck and Saint-Saens in Pelleas – Debussy’s considerable abilities in orchestration made Debussy’s Pelleas et Melisande the most influential of his works. Debussy was at this time one of the leading composers of the impressionist movement (although Debussy did not like to be labelled an ‘impressionist’).
