Contra (魂斗羅 Kontora?) is a 1988 run and gun action game for the Nintendo Entertainment System by Konami. It was first released in Japan on July 8th, 1988, then it was released October that year to North America, and throughout 1989 elsewhere around the world. Contra is a portmanteau of “CONTINUE” and “SOLID”, as well as being short for ‘Contravention’. Contra was produced by the Japanese siblings, Hideo Kojima (the director) and Shigeo Kojima (producer), designed by the creator of the series, Tokuro Fujiwara and programmed by Kazuhisa Hashimoto. Contra is considered to be one of the best and most difficult side-scrolling action games for its time, with certain versions being banned in Europe due to their extreme difficulty level.
