“God Put a Smile Upon Your Face” is Coldplay’s second UK single, released on 21 November 2002. It hit number one on the UK Singles Chart after it was used in a Vodafone commercial. Coldplay performed the song together with Björk at her Homogenic Tour concert in 2001.
The lyrics, Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin has said, were inspired by his break up with actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
The Coldplay single was later included in Coldplay’s second album A Rush of Blood to the Head. In 2004 Coldplay released a live recording of “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face” as a UK CD single, Coldplay Live 2003, and on the DVD Coldplay Live 2003.’s only
Coldplay have performed this song at various charity gigs like “The Concert for Diana”.
