Chausson’s “Poeme” is a simple work that immediately catches the ear. The free, graceful figuration and undulating flow of the pianist’s left hand lines portray lovely images: sunlight rippling on water, an elegant dance of nymphs and fauns, or a sailing ship delicately gliding across wind-ruffled water. Chausson was inspired by the romantic paintings of Jules Pascin and Maurice Denis as well as by poems such as Baudelaire’s “L’Invitation au voyage” (Invitation to a Journey), Henri de Regnier’s “La Flute Enchantee” (Enchanted Flute), and Chausson’s own earlier poem “Le Fleuve” (The River). Chausson was moved by the antithesis of the serene, natural images and the contrasting sense of danger and loss portrayed in each.
