Charles A. Zimmerman (September 9, 1921 – September 5, 2008) was an American army officer and musician.   He is the composer of the jazz standard ” Anchors Aweigh “, which has been performed by many jazz musicians such as Buddy Rich , Gene Krupa and Glenn Miller . Charles Zimmerman grew up in New York City , where he learned to play piano at an early age, playing for silent films at his local movie theater. Charles Zimmerman served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II and used a piano as a foxhole buddy . Charles was inspired to write “Anchors Aweigh” after hearing music played by the United States Marine Band . Charles Zimmerman’s ” Anchors Aweigh ” was registered for copyright on July 19, 1945.
The song “Anchors Aweigh” is often associated with the United States Navy and has been used in many movies such as Down Periscope , The Perfect Storm and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World . Charles Zimmerman wrote other songs besides ” Anchors Aweigh “, but none achieved the same level of success. Charles Zimmerman died on September 5, 2008 at his home in St. Charles, Illinois , aged 86.
