Bizet – Habanera from Carmen Piano Sheet Music Bizet (1838 – 1875) was a French composer best known for his opera Carmen, which is regarded as one of the most important works in the entire opera literature. Bizet achieved few successes before his final work, which has since secured his reputation. Bizet’s marriage to Geneviève Halévy was intermittently happy and produced one son. After his death, his work, apart from Carmen, was generally neglected. Bizet’s birth in Paris on 25 October 1838, the eldest child of Adolphe Bizet (1799–1862) and Louise-Cécile Boudet (1806–1875), was followed by the birth of three more children in successive years. Bizet’s father was a professor of solfège at the Conservatoire de Paris and his mother was a respected pianist. Bizet had piano lessons from an early age, but where he learned to play the violin and how he was exposed to the rich musical life of Paris are unknown. Bizet’s father died in 1862, leaving his mother to bring up her four children by herself. Bizet later drew on memories of his childhood in several of his compositions. Bizet’s early promise manifested itself around 1855–56 when he began to compose the Messe solennelle and Carillon de Westminster. Bizet’s biographer Edward Lockspeiser has suggested that Bizet may first have encountered the music of Wagner at this time, as Bizet’s early works show traces of the influence of the older composer, including a fondness for leitmotifs. Bizet’s first published work, the Grand duo concertant (1856), written as his entry piece for the competition of the Prix de Rome 1857, was received with great critical acclaim and Bizet traveled to Italy as a winner.
