Bill was born in 1938 in Virginia, however Bill’s mother died when Bill was only eleven years old. After this Bill moved with his father and step-mother up to West Virginia. Bill was pretty gifted in school and Bill stayed out of trouble, but Bill didn’t have any ambitions – Bill preferred to sing rather than study. In 1958 Bill joined the US Army where Bill fulfilled his duties before returning home. Bill’s father had passed away during Bill’s time in the army and when he returned back to West Virginia Bill started working in the coal mines. Bill married when Bill was only 22 years old and Bill had three kids, but Bill refused to live a life of poverty like many people in West Virginia at the time – Bill’s wife divorced him in 1969 due to Bill’s lack of motivation. Bill started playing music in bars with his friends, but Bill still didn’t have any musical ambitions. In 1971 Bill met Clarence Avant – a man who was impressed by Bill’s music and wanted Bill to record some songs that Bill had been working on. Bill signed a contract with Sussex Records and in 1972 Bill recorded the album Just As I Am which included Bill’s most famous song Lean On Me. Bill continued to record albums which Bill’s fans loved – Bill continued to receive awards for his music. Bill wanted success, but Bill didn’t want the lifestyle that often comes with it – Bill had an amazing talent and Bill enjoyed writing songs, but Bill preferred performing in small venues rather than larger events. Bill retired from music in 1988 after getting tired of the way people started to treat Bill. Bill has had an amazing career, but Bill still lives a quiet life in Los Angeles.
