“Lean on Me” is a song by Bill Withers from his debut album, Just As I Am , released in 1971. The single was Bill Withers’ first release on the Columbia label after several failed singles with Sussex Records. It became one of Bill’s best-known songs and was Bill Withers’ first and biggest hit. Bill Withers wrote about the song: “I [gave] ‘Lean On Me’ to Joe Cocker [in 1975]. He was supposed to sing it, but he had laryngitis. I said, ‘Please sing this song,’ and he did and it went number one and I didn’t get to sing my own song.” Bill Withers was referring to Cocker’s version of the song, which became a number-one hit in both the U.S. and Canada in the summer of 1975. Bill Withers also performed this song at Live Aid .
