For Beethoven, the piano was a magical machine: it was “symphonic” in its range of color and dynamics; capable of embodying human feeling through both the action of the keys in playing music and the shape and disposition of their levers within. Beethoven brought all his musical experience to bear on this new instrument when he composed the set of three piano sonatas, Opus 31 in 1803. Beethoven later wrote to Erich K laws that his publisher had asked him for a new trio, and Beethoven “had only to look into his closet for some old music paper” which contained sketches of the first movement. Beethoven structured the sonata in three movements, with a fast–slow–fast arrangement. Beethoven wrote to his friend George August von Griesinger: “I was looking for something novel… which would be in keeping with the kindness of my friends here and which I could dedicate to them”. Beethoven’s dedication reads: “The present Sonata has been composed for the pianoforte alone, and is consequently dedicated to the amateur Beethoven”. Beethoven’s new sonatas were well received in Vienna at their early performances, including the 1803 premiere of Opus 31 No. 3 by Beethoven’s student Carl Czerny. Robert Schumann later wrote of the set: “It is Beethoven through and through. They are … the most imposing products of his mind”.
