The dances have often been arranged for other ensembles, both solo and ensemble. Bartok was inspired to write these dances after his first journey to Rumania in September 1908 . Bartok wrote Romanian folkdances with the intention of capturing the characteristic rhythms, ornaments, and improvisatory feel of Rumanian folk music. Bartok achieved his goal through rhythm, harmony, melodic shape, and form in these dances.
