Bartok – Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, Op.20 Piano Sheet Music

Bartók began to write seriously at the age of eight or nine. His first compositions display a certain effort at originality, but without much technical experience Bartok’s early works were not very convincing. Bartok studied composition under Janos Koessler from 1897 to 1901 and showed “great talent for counterpoint and fugue” in his studies with the Hungarian composer. Bartok also studied piano and choral conducting in these years. Bartok first public performance of his own work was a piano recital in Budapest’s Casino Hall on February 1, 1903. Bartok wrote three pieces for this event: “a set of variations, a rhapsody and an improvisation.” Bartok continued to compose during his student years; he took courses both on philosophy at the University of Budapest and in composition at the Royal Academy of Music, where Bartok studied from 1905 to 1906. Bartok was a leading member of what has been called “The Martenars” music society (founded 1901) that met to play new compositions by Bartok and his colleagues.”
