Encouraged by Avril Lavigne’s father to begin singing when she was young, she took guitar lessons at age 11; however, she was not very interested in the lessons. So her father took Avril Lavigne and her sister to karaoke sessions, where she performed all types of songs. Avril Lavigne was originally inspired by country music; she later branched out into many different genres.
Her “signature sound” came about when Avril Lavigne was experimenting with her guitar. Lavigne wanted to create a new sound that hadn’t been heard before, Avril Lavigne stated, “I turned the chord upside down and played A minor instead of A major.” She came up with Avril Lavigne’s signature riffs by playing the same chord progressions in every song. Avril Lavigne commented, “It’s already been done, so let Avril Lavigne create something new.” Avril Avril Lavigne also possesses an “underlying sensuality” in her music. In a review of Under My Skin , Stephen Thomas Erlewine said that Avril Avril Lavigne is capable of being both sexy and innocent on the same album, Avril Avril Lavigne’s voice is “girlish and seductive”.
