Anastacia – I’m Outta Love
Anastacia’s “I’m Outta Love” is a very popular song released in 2000. It gained much attention for its lyrics and distinctive sound, both of which point to a darker meaning behind the catchy tune. The protagonist of the story begins by telling her love interest “You’re out of my heart, you’re out of my soul ,” indicating that she has lost all affection for him. However, what many listeners fail to realize is that the protagonist describes herself as being so dissatisfied with herself and her life after the breakup, rather than necessarily feeling this way toward her ex.
The lyrics describe the protagonist’s feelings of inadequacy, which she blames on her unfaithful partner. The song begins with what seems to be a breakup, but instead the singer describes herself as someone who no longer lives for anyone but herself. She is able to finally admit that “I’m not what I seem,” and is no longer someone who can be with the unnamed person. Although it seems that the breakup in this song has caused a significant change in the protagonist, she still continues to sing about her love interest instead of herself in the second verse. She compares herself negatively to a number of things, including an airplane crash , saying “I’m nothing more than a bird with broken wings.” While she continues to sing about her love interest in the second verse, the protagonist describes herself as someone who has given up on living for anyone else. She tells him that she’s not coming back because of how much he has hurt her, and she still feels this way even though they are no longer together . The protagonist sings about how horrible it is to be dependent on someone else in the final verse, describing herself as “walking wounded” because of what’s happened between them.
At first glance, the song seems fairly simple . However, by reading the lyrics carefully it becomes apparent how much more complex this song is than it first seems. The protagonist describes her feelings of dependency on someone else, and by the end of the song she vows to never live for anyone ever again .
