Ai Yori Aoshi (綾奈々子 Ai Yori Aoshi?, lit. “Ai and Aoi”) is a Japanese seinen manga series written and illustrated by Kou Fumizuki, serialized in Hakusensha’s Young Animal from 1998 to 2008. The individual chapters were collected in 18 tankōbon volumes. Ai Yori Aoshi revolves around the life of Kaoru Hanabishi, a college student who lives alone following the death of his father seven years ago. He is seemingly unable to live on his own and has failed the college entrance exams twice. The story begins with Kaoru returning to his home, after being sent away for failing his high school entrance exams the year before. Ai Yori Aoshi is a romance manga with many different kinds of relationships explored throughout its story. Ai Yori Aoshi was made into an anime television series by Studio Pierrot and Aniplex, which aired on TV Tokyo from 2002 to 2003. It combines elements of drama, comedy, tragedy, and shōnen-ai themes. Ai Yori Aoshi has been licensed by Viz Media for an English language release in North America and by Tokyopop for a German language release in Germany. Ai Yori Aoshi was adapted as a visual novel released on the PlayStation 2, developed by Supersweep and published by Bandai.
