Adele was offered a recording contract from XL Recordings after a friend posted her demo on Myspace in 2006. In 2007, she received the Brit Awards “Critics’ Choice” award and won the BBC Sound of 2008. Her debut album, 19, was released in 2008 to commercial and critical success. It is certified four times platinum in the UK, and double platinum in the US. Adele released her second studio album 21 in early 2011. The album was critically well received and surpassed the success of her debut, earning numerous awards in 2012, among them a record-tying six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year; two Brit Awards, including British Album of the Year; and three American Music Awards, including Artist of the Year. The album has been certified 16 times platinum in the UK, and is overall Adele’s most commercially successful album to date with over 30 million copies worldwide. Adele is noted for her retro style, wide vocal range, and emotive performances of ballads about failed relationships. Adele was born Adele Adkins on May 5, 1988 in Tottenham, London to an English mother and a Welsh father who met at university. Following Josh’s birth Adele found it difficult to balance her career with her personal life, provoking arguments with her manager. Adele began writing songs at the age of 15 and soon started to play live in local pubs around Tottenham where she met guitarist and co-writer Simon Hayes.
